Summary of the importance of family by Sam Keen
In this article, the writer Sam Keen tries to prove the fact that family is necessary for civilization of free people, love, humanism, sympathy, loyalty and freedom. Family is the natural school of love where children bear respect and loyalty to family and kin. The bonds of love and kinship among the family members are stronger than the bonds between individuals and the state.
That is why the target of tyrants and idealist philosophers has always been the family. They believe that unless the family life is shattered, the loyalty of individuals cannot be shifted to the obedience of leaders or the welfare of the state.
Family is necessary for the education of children in values which we like. It is necessary for teaching’ children respect, sympathy and loyalty to others.
Unfortunately, after the industrial revolution, the ties of kinship and family love shifted to selfish ends of earning and spending. Economic activities took the place of love and kinship. The college of home economics was renamed as the centre of consumer goods. As a result, the dignity of the home was degraded. People destroyed the cradle of civilization by giving more importance to the economic order and profits than loyalty to family.
Some people argue that children of bad parents suffer a lot in dysfunctional families and are deprived of love, compassion and sympathy. The writer says that such deprived children can be better parents because they will provide their children what they did not receive from their parents.
In short, when anything becomes more important to a society than the welfare of its children and family, it is a sure sign of spiritual degradation and dehumanization.
